Deccan College is the third oldest educational institute in India. Earlier known as Hindoo College, it was started on 6th October 1821 by the Bombay Presidency Government at the initiative of its Governor, Mountstuart Elphinstone by using the Dakshina Grant.

  • Books
    This library has a notable collection of books (published from the early 16th Century onwards i.e. 1523-1940) that has some of the rarest and unique titles. The Citie of God is the oldest book in the library’s collection dated to 1523. Written by St Augustine in the 5 th  century CE, The City of God is considered one of his most famous works.

  • Theses
    This collection contains both Doctoral Theses and Masters Dissertations. It includes reports about the outstanding, original, or expanded research on a new or existing topic conducted by the M.A. and Ph.D. scholars. The topics covered all branches of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Linguistics, Medieval and Maratha History, Sociology, Anthropology, and Sanskrit studies on all Indian bases.

  • Dissertations

  • Deccan College Publications
    Deccan College publications in Sanskrit studies, linguistics, history, anthropology, sociology, and archaeology have established themselves as a brand name in India and outside.  The library consists of over 300 works comprising Bulletin volumes, monographs, doctoral dissertations, research reports, seminar proceedings, etc. It is exemplary that the first volume of the Bulletin of the Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute appeared in print in 1940. Since then it has been published regularly without a single break and volume 83 for 2023 is the latest number. It contains research contributions from scholars belonging to the Institute but also accepts invited papers from outside. The Bulletin is a major periodical and has been received well in academic circles in India and abroad. It publishes high-quality and original research papers, essays, critical review articles, and book reviews concerning various branches of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Medieval History, Anthropology, Sanskrit, and Linguistics. This periodical primarily aims to disseminate up-to-date results of archaeological studies including excavations, linguistic and language surveys, and critical studies on Sanskrit texts. The monograph series too continues. These are the publications that serve as the true spokesman for a research institute.

  • Pothi's
    Pothī (पोथी) or Pauthī refers to a “printed copy of manuscript” (printed on long-separate leaves of paper), according to the Rāmacaritrabhāṣā (classified as Renderings of Sanskrit classics/Hindu Scriptures).

  • Manuscripts
    This library has a huge collection of over 11,140 paper manuscripts in Sanskrit, Prakrit, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu languages. There are some illustrated or special types of manuscripts also available. These manuscripts cover subject areas like Veda, Vedanta, Upanishad, Kavya, Dharmasastra, Itihasa, Purana, Jyotisha, Nyaya, Vyakarana, Yoga, Ganita, Kosha, Nataka, Ayurveda, Mallashastra, Mimamsa, Subhashita, and Guhyasutra etc.  Saubhagya Kavach is the oldest manuscript in the library. Written in Sanskrit, it is dated to 1023 CE. It is a manuscript on the Saubhagya Kavach Shloka of Goddess Lalita Tripura Sundari, which is said to bestow prosperity, luck, and auspiciousness on devotees.

  • Maps & Atlases
    Maps (survey sheets, survey maps, wall maps) that represent a symbolic or conventional picture of the physical and cultural landscape of a small area on a very large scale are known as Topographical maps or Toposheets.
    • These maps are based on an actual survey of the area.
    • The scale of the maps is large enough to show the physical and cultural features in detail.
    • These features are represented by specific symbols, signs, and colours.
    • Topo sheets are available on a scale of 1:250000 and 1:50000 & 1:25000
    ‘Topographic sheet' contains information about an area like roads, railways, settlements, canals, rivers, electric poles, contours/levels, and important landmarks, etc. According to their usage, they are available at different scales (e.g. 1:250000, 1:50000, and 1:25000, etc, where the former is a small scale as compared to the latter). They are made on a suitable projection for that area and contain lat-long information at the corners. Thus any point on it can be identified with its corresponding lat-long, depending upon the scale (i.e. if the scale is large, more accurate lat-long). An atlas is a bound collection of maps, charts, plates, or tables illustrating a subject. In addition to being about geography, they can illustrate any number of subjects, from anatomy or botany to history or zoology.

  • Audio Video Collections
    This collection includes Microfilms, microfiche, micro cards, Audio Visual Collections (audio and video cassettes), DVDs, CDs, etc.
